Following the annual London Pride parade, a representative of The Scout Association gives his views to Winkball.
I am terribly disappointed. Not one candidate has called at my door during the General Election campaign. I have received, so far, three leaflets delivered by Royal Mail. These were from the Alliance Party’s candidate Billy Webb, and the Tory/UUP candidate Fred Cobain.
There have been a few leaflets pushed through my door by the DUP. But I have seen no sign of Mr Dodds.
Super Naomi seems to be doing well in East Belfast challenging The Rt Hon Peter Robinson, Northern Ireland’s First Minister for the seat in the House of Commons.
My brother tells me that he has been bombarded by leaflets from Anna Lo in South Belfast. He tells me that he is voting for the Tory. At least I hope that my parents and other brother will be supporting Jayne Dunlop in North Antrim.
I know that on Thursday, I will be voting for the Alliance candidate, Billy Webb. For me there is only one party that is really thinking about the future of Northern Ireland, only one party that wants us to get away from the past of voting “Orange” or “Green”.
“This prayer was written at the age of twelve by a boy proud to call himself a Scout. He laid down his life for his country in the 1914-18 war. His statuette by Sir William Goscombe John R.A., is in the Headquarters of the Charterhouse Scout Group. His prayer is enshrined in Chester Cathedral.” from The Scouter Digest.
“…Basil Webb, the son of Lt-Col. Sir Henry Webb, 1st Baronet, of Llwynarthan, Monmouthshire, a Liberal M.P., and mining engineer. Basil Webb was born in 1898 and was educated at Winchester College from which he joined the army at the height of the First World War. Notably, Basil Webb was the author of the Chester Cathedral Refectory prayer, which remains in use today
. He served in France as a Second Lieutenant in the 1st Bn Welsh Guards and was killed in action on 1 December 1917 aged 19. He is buried at Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery, southwest of Cambrai.
“In 1911, the year in which Goscombe John was knighted, a standing figure in bronze of Basil Webb in Scout uniform was exhibited at the Royal Academy. It is thus probable that the present bust dates to the same period. The standing figure was subsequently presented to Charterhouse School (Baden-Powell’s alma mater), the gift of Lady Webb, in memory of her son. In 1919 Sir Henry Webb bore the costs of renovating the crypt and altar of Chester Cathedral, where an inscription may still be found identifying the restoration work ‘in memory of his gallant son and his companions’.” from The Armoury of St James’s description of a Bronze Bust of a Boy Scout

David Cameron’s policy is to ‘send a signal’ that marriage is better than any other type of relationship. Our campaign is ‘sending a signal’ back: don’t judge my family.
